Compassion focused therapy (CFT) starts with the idea that it is important to understand how the human brain got to be the way it is, how it can cause suffering to self and others, and what we can do about it. This quest reveals that the human brain is part of the flow of evolution, along with all other living things. The process of life began about 3.5 billion years ago; we are a product of countless generations and species that have gone before us in the struggle of life. 99% of species that have ever existed are now extinct. It is estimated that there are between 10 and 14 million species currently alive. Compassion begins by understanding the flow of life. This gives rise to four key “truths”.
